Best Practices

NC State is committed to the safety and well‐being of minors. Employees and volunteers should be positive role models and treat others with respect, courtesy, and dignity. Employees and volunteers must abide by NC State policies, regulations and rules in addition to state and federal law.


Electronic Communication with Minors:

As online interaction increases between personnel and youth due to the implementation of online learning tools, it is important that the correct policies and procedures are in place. Please follow the guidelines in the following documents:


Required Supervision Ratios:

Below are the required supervision ratios for minors which have been provided by the American Camp Association. 

  • 5 years & younger 1 staff for each 5 overnight participants and 1 staff for each 6 day participant
  • 6–8 years 1:6 for overnight, and 1:8 for day
  • 9–14 years 1:8 for overnight and 1:10 for day
  • 15–18 years 1:10 for overnight and 1:12 for day

Training:

For NC State programs, the required regulation training course, EHPS-YP100 is automatically assigned in REPORTER to those associated with a program or activity for minors.

  • Personal Boundaries: This document outlines appropriate boundaries in programs and activities involving youth, and must be agreed to after viewing the training video.
