Safety is a community responsibility. Training and education is a critical component to the mission of the Department of Risk Assessment. Our offices, Violence Prevention & Threat Management and Youth Programs & Compliance offer a number of training opportunities students, faculty and staff to attend.

Training is made available throughout the year. Though, we have scheduled training dates identified in REPORTER, departmental requests can be made. If you are interested in a specialized training topic please complete the form below:

Understanding Workplace/Campus Violence Prevention and Your Role

Safety is a community responsibility and all University community members should be aware of their responsibility in sharing concerns.  All staff and faculty are encouraged to complete this training at least biennially.  This is an interactive training offered to all employees and students.                         

At the completion of this training attendees will be able to:

  • identify components of the Campus/Workplace Violence Prevention Regulation,
  • understand what constitutes violent behavior and their mandatory reporting responsibilities,
  • identify concerning behaviors,
  • identify strategies to enhance communication and defuse hostile situations,
  • identify available resources.

Workplace Violence Prevention and Guidance for Managers and Leaders

Safety is a community responsibility. According to the Campus/Workplace Violence Prevention Regulation all supervisors and managers are required to attend workplace violence prevention training. As a manager or leader, you are committed to a work environment free from violence and threats of violence. Workplace violence can present itself in many different forms, such as written, spoken, or even physical contact.

Workplace violence in any form is unacceptable. It’s important you take every reasonable precaution to keep your workplace safe. This training will provide information to assist in helping faculty and staff to identify concerns and recognize who to report concerns and the value of early intervention.

Minors Regulation

The required regulation training course, EHPS-YP100 is automatically assigned in REPORTER to those associated with a program or activity for minors.

Personal Boundaries: This document outlines appropriate boundaries in programs and activities involving youth, and must be agreed to after viewing the training video.

  • Attendees will review the Minors Regulation
  • Attendees will review applicable university policies, procedures, and rules in regards to programs hosting minors.
  • Attendees will learn information on child abuse identification and reporting.
  • Attendees will review best practices when working with minors.

Child Abuse Awareness

Programs that involve the participation of minors are required to provide specific training to their students, staff/faculty, and volunteers. To ensure compliance, the Violence Prevention & Threat Management Program has developed this module to assist in identifying the basic warning signs of abuse and/or neglect of minors and their mandatory reporting requirements. This training was developed based on requirements under NC State Regulation 01.25.18 – Programs that Involve the Participation of Minors.

Question, Persuade & Refer – Suicide Prevention for Faculty & Staff

QPR is intended to teach individuals how to recognize the warning signs of suicide, including verbal, behavioral, and situational clues. It provides guidelines on how to question a person about suicidal thoughts, persuade and refer the person for help. The QPR training is both educational and experiential, and includes:

  • An overview of statistics regarding suicide
  • Myths and facts regarding suicide & suicidal behaviors
  • Identifying behavioral, verbal, and situational warning signs
  • Role playing and practicing the skills

A Day in the Life: A Workplace Response to Domestic Violence

This is a comprehensive training program developed by the Centrer County Women’s Resource Center. This training is an outcome of a domestic violence homicide that occurred in 2001, in State College, PA. The training objectives are as follows:

  • Increase awareness and understanding of domestic violence and how it affects people at home and in the workplace.
  • Increase opportunities for employees to access resources.
  • Increase knowledge about how best to support abused employees.
  • Motivate attendees to become part of the ‘solution’ at work and in the community.

De-Escalation Strategies

Tense or escalated situations can arise suddenly with students, colleagues, and even personal acquaintances. It is important to know how to respond safely and compassionately without further escalating these situations.

  • Participants will learn about active listening and other specific strategies to effectively respond to and de-escalate tense situations.
  • Attendees will also learn about the NC State’s Behavior Assessment Team and response process when concerning behavior is shared.
  • This training is designed for employees to learn basic de-escalation strategies and how the University responds to concerns.

Threat Assessment Fundamentals

NC State leads the nation with a robustly trained Behavior Assessment Team (BAT) that conducts threat assessments and develops threat management strategies to prevent incidents of targeted violence to protect our university community. Community members, for years, have expressed interest in learning more about what we do and the research behind prevention.

  • This training will provide participants a glimpse into the world of threat assessment and threat management.
  • They will learn about core terminology in the field, the research that information threat assessment processes, threat management strategies, and how we this looks at NC State.
  • You will leave the training fascinated with this topic, how you play a role in maintaining the role to keep the university safe.
